If you think San Antonio is just the Alamo and the River Walk, you're missing a huge part of what makes this city such a great place to live.

Whether you're moving to San Antonio, PCSing to San Antonio, visiting for the weekend, planning a date night, looking for family activities, or you've lived here for years and just need something different to do, there's a lot more here than most people realize.

You can catch an NBA game, ride roller coasters, float a Texas river, hike to dinosaur tracks, spend a night downtown, explore the Texas Hill Country, or put together an entire day without spending much money at all.

As a San Antonio REALTOR® and someone who actually lives and works throughout this area, I wanted to put together more than another generic tourist list.

These are 25 of the best things to do in and around San Antonio, Texas, whether you're here with your family, your friends, your significant other, or completely solo.

1. Catch a San Antonio Spurs Game 🏀

You can't talk about San Antonio without talking about the San Antonio Spurs.

Going to a Spurs game is one of those experiences I recommend even if you're not the biggest basketball fan.

It's bigger than just the game. It's part of San Antonio culture.

Grab some food, throw on the Silver and Black, and experience a home game in person.

This works for families, a group of friends, or even as a date night.

And if you move to San Antonio, eventually somebody is going to ask you:

"You been to a Spurs game yet?"

You might as well be able to say yes.

2. Walk the San Antonio River Walk 🌊

Yes, it's touristy.

And yes, you should still do it.

The San Antonio River Walk is one of the city's signature experiences, but you don't have to spend a ton of money to enjoy it.

Walking along the river itself is a great way to experience downtown.

You can grab dinner, stop for drinks, take a river cruise, or simply walk and explore.

I'd recommend experiencing it during the day at least once and then coming back at night because the atmosphere completely changes.

And if you're looking for free things to do in San Antonio, simply exploring the River Walk on foot is an easy one.

3. Spend the Day at Six Flags Fiesta Texas 🎢

If roller coasters are your thing, Six Flags Fiesta Texas needs to be on your list.

San Antonio has a surprisingly strong theme park scene, and Fiesta Texas is one of the biggest reasons why.

You've got roller coasters, thrill rides, family attractions, seasonal events, and plenty to turn it into a full-day trip.

It's also in the Far Northwest San Antonio area near La Cantera, The Rim, and the I-10/Loop 1604 corridor, so there's plenty nearby if you want to grab dinner afterward.

4. Spend a Day at SeaWorld San Antonio & Aquatica 🐋💦

SeaWorld isn't just about marine life anymore.

Between the animals, shows, roller coasters, rides, and Aquatica water park, you can easily make an entire day out of it.

This is especially worth having on your list if you're moving to San Antonio with kids.

And when Texas summer arrives, having access to a water park isn't a bad thing.

5. Visit the Alamo 🏛️

You knew this one was coming.

If you're going to live in San Antonio, you should experience the Alamo at least once.

It's one of the most recognizable historic sites in Texas and sits right in the middle of downtown San Antonio.

Even better, you can combine it with several other activities on this list.

Visit the Alamo, walk over to the River Walk, explore downtown, grab lunch, and you've already built yourself a pretty solid San Antonio day.

6. Explore the San Antonio Missions 🚲

Don't stop your San Antonio history tour at the Alamo.

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is one of the most unique parts of the city.

You can explore Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada, and the National Historical Park itself does not charge an entrance fee.

If you enjoy cycling, walking, history, or photography, the Mission Reach portion of the San Antonio River also makes this a great outdoor day.

It's one of my favorite examples of something that's historically significant without feeling like you're simply walking around a museum.

7. Spend a Morning or Night at The Pearl ☕🍽️🍸

The Pearl deserves more than a quick stop.

You can grab coffee in the morning, check out the farmers market, walk around, shop, eat at one of the restaurants, or come back later for dinner and drinks.

You also have Hotel Emma right there, which is worth seeing even if you're not staying overnight.

The Pearl works for almost everybody.

Bring the kids during the day.

Meet somebody for coffee.

Take your spouse on a date.

Meet friends for dinner and drinks.

Or just go walk around by yourself.

You can also connect from this area into the Museum Reach section of the River Walk, making it easy to turn the Pearl into part of a much longer day.

8. Eat and Explore at Historic Market Square 🌮

If you want some San Antonio culture, head to Historic Market Square.

Food, Mexican culture, music, shops, events, and plenty of color make this a completely different experience from some of the other areas on the list.

Come hungry.

This isn't the place where I'd recommend eating beforehand.

9. Visit the San Antonio Zoo & Brackenridge Park 🦒🌳

BEST FOR: FAMILIES | OUTDOORS | FULL DAY

The San Antonio Zoo is an obvious family pick, but I'd expand this into an entire Brackenridge Park day.

You've got the zoo, green space, trails and other attractions nearby.

Pack some food or grab lunch and don't rush through it.

This is another area where several San Antonio attractions sit close enough together that you can experience more than one in the same trip.

10. Walk Through the Japanese Tea Garden 🌺

Right around the Brackenridge area you'll find one of San Antonio's prettiest spots: the Japanese Tea Garden.

It's a great place to walk around, take pictures, slow down for a little bit, or add onto a date.

This is also one of those places I recommend to people looking for free things to do in San Antonio.

You don't always have to spend $100 to have a good Saturday.

11. Hike Government Canyon & See Dinosaur Tracks 🥾🦖

This is one of my favorites because people don't always realize something like this exists inside San Antonio.

Government Canyon State Natural Area protects thousands of acres on the northwestern side of the city and has more than 40 miles of trails.

And yes:

There are actual dinosaur tracks.

Reaching the tracks requires roughly a five-mile round-trip backcountry hike, so this isn't just stepping out of your car and taking a picture.

Government Canyon is great for hiking, trail running, mountain biking on permitted trails, wildlife, photography, camping, or just getting away from the city without actually going very far.

One tip: check conditions before going. Trails can close after weather, and reservations are a good idea when the park is busy.

12. Hike Eisenhower Park 🌄

If you want to get outside without committing to a Government Canyon adventure, Eisenhower Park is another great option.

You'll get Hill Country terrain and some great views without having to drive hours outside San Antonio.

It's great for a morning hike, workout, walk with friends, or simply getting outside when the weather cooperates.

13. Walk the Land Bridge at Phil Hardberger Park 🌳

BEST FOR: FREE | WALKING | RUNNING | FAMILIES | DOGS

Phil Hardberger Park gives you another outdoor option right inside the city.

The Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge is probably the most recognizable feature and connects the two sides of the park over Wurzbach Parkway.

Walk it, run it, bring the family, bring the dog, or just get outside.

If someone asks me for inexpensive or free outdoor things to do without leaving San Antonio, this is an easy recommendation.

14. Take a Day Trip to Garner State Park & the Frio River 🏞️

BEST FOR: DAY TRIP | OUTDOORS | SWIMMING | FRIENDS | FAMILIES

Now we're getting outside San Antonio.

But Garner State Park is absolutely worth the drive.

Located along the beautiful Frio River, Garner is one of those places that reminds you how much there is to experience once you leave the city and head deeper into the Texas Hill Country.

You can swim or tube the Frio, kayak, canoe, camp, picnic, fish, bike, or hike.

The park has around 16 miles of scenic hiking trails, including routes that give you some incredible Hill Country views.

And if you're feeling ambitious, tackle Old Baldy.

Garner also has one of the coolest Texas traditions around: summer evening dances at the park pavilion, a tradition that dates back generations.

This isn't somewhere I'd rush.

Make a day out of it.

Better yet, stay overnight and make a weekend out of it.

15. Float the Comal or Guadalupe River in New Braunfels 🛟

If you've never floated a Texas river, eventually you're going to have to.

Head toward New Braunfels and spend a summer day floating the Comal or Guadalupe.

This can be a relaxing family outing or an entirely different experience with a group of friends depending on where you go and how you plan it.

Just remember: Texas summers are hot.

Bring water, sunscreen, and know the river rules before you go.

16. Spend a Summer Day at Schlitterbahn 💦

While you're talking New Braunfels, you can't leave out Schlitterbahn.

If you have kids, this can easily become one of those summer traditions.

And let's be real—adults can have just as much fun at a water park.

San Antonio and the surrounding area have enough major parks that the region has become a legitimate destination for theme-park and water-park fans.

17. Go Underground at Natural Bridge Caverns 🪨

Want something completely different?

Go underground.

Natural Bridge Caverns gives you the opportunity to explore massive underground formations and caverns just outside San Antonio.

It's one of those experiences that's great when family visits because it's different from anything they're probably expecting when they think of South Texas.

You can also pair it with Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch nearby and make a full day out of that part of the metro.

18. See San Antonio From the Tower of the Americas 🌇

BEST FOR: DATE NIGHT | VIEWS | VISITORS

Want to actually see how big San Antonio is?

Go up.

The Tower of the Americas gives you a completely different perspective of downtown and the surrounding city.

I'd personally time this around sunset.

You can check out the observation level, grab dinner, and then walk around downtown or the River Walk afterward.

That's an easy date night.

19. Explore Southtown & the King William District 🎨

If you want something that feels a little more local, spend some time around Southtown and King William.

You'll find restaurants, bars, coffee shops, art, architecture and some of San Antonio's most recognizable historic homes.

This is a great area to explore without necessarily having a strict itinerary.

Grab coffee.

Walk around.

Find somewhere to eat.

Stop for a drink.

See where the night takes you.

20. Catch Live Music, Comedy or a Show 🎶

San Antonio has more live entertainment than people sometimes give it credit for.

Depending on what's happening, check out places like the Majestic Theatre, Tobin Center, Aztec Theatre, Stable Hall, or one of the city's smaller music and comedy venues.

This is especially worth remembering when you find yourself saying:

"There's nothing to do tonight."

There probably is.

You just haven't looked yet.

21. Do a Downtown or Rooftop Date Night 🍸

Not everything on this list needs to involve kids.

Get dressed up.

Pick a rooftop bar or downtown restaurant.

When rodeo season comes around, go.

Even if you didn't grow up around rodeos.

If you're new to San Antonio, you'll hear people talking about Fiesta.

Don't just attend one thing.

Find a few different Fiesta events and experience what makes each one unique.

24. Build an Almost-Free San Antonio Day 💸

Here's one people don't talk about enough.

You can have a legitimately good day in San Antonio without spending much money.

Try something like this:

Start at the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which does not charge an entrance fee.

Walk around La Villita.

See San Fernando Cathedral.

Head toward the Japanese Tea Garden.

Finish the evening walking around The Pearl.

Try Fredericksburg.

Want live music and a historic Texas dance hall?

Head toward Gruene.

Want cowboy culture?

Check out Bandera.

Want water?

Try Canyon Lake.

Explore places like Lost Maples State Natural Area.

Or make the drive back toward Garner State Park and the Frio River.

That's one of my favorite things about living here.

There's More to San Antonio Than You Think

This is one of the reasons I enjoy living in San Antonio.

You can spend Saturday night at a Spurs game, wake up Sunday and hike through Government Canyon, spend the next weekend floating a river, and then take a completely free walk through the Missions and downtown.

You can live downtown.

You can live in the suburbs.

You can head toward the Hill Country.

You can raise a family here, be single here, retire here, PCS here, or simply come visit for a weekend and find something to do.

And this list still doesn't cover everything.
